My Approach to Photographing Your Family

My approach to photographing your family is a little unconventional. I hinted at this a little bit in last week’s post, but the pressure of getting family portraits taken can feel overwhelming sometimes. It’s fall and among the list of obligations you’ve signed on for, there are also a few things you’d like to do. You’re busy making memories and often family portraits are on the back burner until it’s too late.

Maybe you’ve scheduled them and you want to know, will we get the photo? Will my children smile? Will my husband be a good sport? What if I don’t like my outfit? With all of the opportunities for comparison (on- and off-line) it’s easy to put a lot of pressure on family photos. You’ve spent time and money curating outfits and preparing your kids. You show up and cross your fingers that they smile and look at the camera and you’re really hoping nobody cries.

But what if we looked at family photos differently? What if we saw them as an opportunity to make more memories? I hear often that people’s kids or husbands or wives don’t like taking photos. But if that is your end goal-to take a photo-then you’re missing out!

When you step in front of my camera, my end goal is to facilitate fun memories with your family. Do things always go as planned? Hardly. But I am nothing if not flexible. My approach to photographing your family is gently and respectful. I am not going to shout at your child to smile. But I am going to learn their names. I am going to facilitate games and snuggles and moments that are worthy of being on your walls.
